The municipality of Larvik is now doing more to honour the name of Thor Heyerdahl. During the course of a three year project we will strengthen the ties between Thor Heyerdahls name and Larvik so that the town becomes known as his hometown both in Norway and around the world. We will create new attractions and experiences based on core values such as innovation, adventurousness and sincerity.
Among the many honours received by Thor Heyerdahl is the Royal Geographic Society’s Gold Medal. He was also named as Commander of The order of St. Olav (1951) and received a star from the order in 1970. He also received the order’s highest honour, the cross of The Order of St. Olav in 1987.
