Colla Micheri, Liguria, Italy
Colla Micheri is one of the best preserved towns from the middle ages, to be found on the coast of Liguaria. The town lies approximately midway between Genova and the boarder of France. It is 150m above sea level, and has around 30 permenant residents - mostly Italians. A few of the houses and apartments are used as vacation homes by Italians, as well as a few Frenchman and Norwegians. When Thor Heyerdahl found the town in 1959, the town was almost deserted and the church in a state of ruin. He bought and restored the church and several of the houses and slowly, but surely people started to rerurn and began restoring homes and other buildings. Thor Heyerdahl, himself, chose his final resting place here on a hill above the village.

The municipality of Larvik is now doing more to honour the name of Thor Heyerdahl. During the course of a three year project we will strengthen the ties between Thor Heyerdahls name and Larvik so that the town becomes known as his hometown both in Norway and around the world. We will create new attractions and experiences based on core values such as innovation, adventurousness and sincerity.
The Thor Heyerdahl Institute (established in 2000) is an independant foundation based in Thor Heyerdahls hometown of Larvik and aims to be an arena for international social dialog. The first Thor Heyerdahl International Day was arranged on the 2nd of November 2006, in Oslo.
