Thor Heyerdahl grew up at Steingata 7. His room faced outwards with views of the Larvik fjord and the open sea. In 1933 he left his home to become a student in Oslo. Steingata 7 was purchased by the Larvik municipality in 2007.

The refurbishment and development of the house are part of the “The Home of Thor Heyerdahl” project. Work began in 2007 and the Larvik municipality hopes to open the house to visitors once the refurbishment is completed.

The Home of Thor Heyerdahl, Larvik

Thor Heyerdahl was born in Larvik on the 6th of October 1914.  His life, research, expeditions and not least his ardent commitment to the environment and peace, has made Thor Heyerdahl one of the most famous and recognised Norwegians of all time.  From an early age he had an interest in wildlife and nature and ran almost a museum out of his home at Steingata 7.  Perhaps his early days in Larvik helped to form the man who would later become known for such famous expeditions as Kon-Tiki and Ra?

The municipality of Larvik is now doing more to honour the name of Thor Heyerdahl. During the course of a three year project we will strengthen the ties between Thor Heyerdahls name and Larvik so that the town becomes known as his hometown both in Norway and around the world. We will create new attractions and experiences based on core values such as innovation, adventurousness and sincerity.

”I was in uniform and I know that heroism doesn’t occur from taking orders, but rather from people who through their own willpower and strength are willing to sacrifice their lives for an idea.” Thor Heyerdahl
